Think of this as sermon prep. I personally take 8-12 hours per sermon to prepare.
We want to help create moments of life transformation, empower members of your team to step up to new levels of leading, and engage our congregation in passionate worship.
The key behind this is preparation. Just like sermons, I would never “wing it”.
The worship we watch on you tube or dvd will be extraordinarily well planned and prepared. It just won’t be that obvious.
We can’t make anybody experience grace. Nor can we make them encounter God. But we can help them. The number one thing in creating a runway towards a grace based worship set is to start big and end big. Big can be fun.
Flow between songs. Don’t stop. Speak small and sincerely. Engage the worship and give people a tow rope.
Lets look at a basic grace based worship set already used.
*Write out your plan. You probably will not remember it and working with a team of musicians who are going to follow you will distract you. Think sermon prep.
Your 2 songs to start with.
Always start big. Fun…expectation. Let the music do its thing. Make a declaration. Kick off with the theme song.
-The call to worship that will lead into “Happy Day” which then will flow into “When I Call On Your Name” both with very basic intro chords/music (very important).
The call to worship sounds like this *make sure musicians are playing!:
Good morning Christ Church…(take your time and let them focus)
I just want to remind us all that the reason we sing today is because (us/we- not them)
God's Glory made its way into our story.
This is an amazing thing that God did. He didn't have to. (Compassion not instruction)
He could have remained distant and so glorious that we couldn't draw near but he choose to come to us in the form of Jesus His Son to be able to draw close to us, and show us what He is like, what His Glory is like. (this is the tow rope…give folks something to hang on to)
Sometimes in the midst of the chaos got to go back to the cross. (Give folk a target or reason to worship)
Go back and say, "We have been raised with Christ, we set your hearts on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set our minds on things above, not on Earthly things."
Lift your voice with me…(get big but not brash)
(Flow right in) When I Call On Your Name
Now you just finished “When I call on Your name…”
Thank you Lord for your amazing grace.
Even now let your Spirit come and fill our hearts.(Bury the worship in the heart during family time)
We glorify you and lift your name. Everybody said amen? (Collect folk together, keep us linked)
Before you take a seat…
Turn to the person beside you give them a warm Christ Church welcome… (Take your time, get genuine unity happening)
Now Family Time has ended or communion…
You now have 3 worship songs to create the outlet of what you started with the first 2.
The preacher is going to springboard for you.
Your first song needs no introduction other than a slightly longer musical intro to refocus people.
Keep this simple. This song is going to be followed by prophetic ministry which you have already set up. Find the words on the prepared piece of paper. Keep them clear. Stuck somewhere…visible only to you.
Light Of The World.
Its familiar and warm. People didn’t need a runway for this one or introduction. They recognised the chords maybe?
As you close it off, the musician keep playing quietly. Turn to them and let them know if need be. Be gentle and quiet.
You focus on the people and start to release the environment.
Jesus thank you for coming into our lives. (Slow and very gentle)
If there is anything we are facing this week or struggling with…(People will have and so give them time to think about what you are suggesting)
We hand that over to you today. (Almost be relieved that this is even possible)
The answers and breakthroughs come from you Lord…
We love you Jesus and give you thanks, your grace is enough for us…(You are already looking at the next song and will flow in after a tiny bit more time allowing folk to do what you have suggested)
This next song is the ministry time. One on one. It’s a familiar song, not too new. Its very simple and easy to sing with eyes closed. This is the song people will use to experience the presence of God.
When the Music Fades
This will linger or flow into a type of basic free worship, using a repetitive line or 2. Don’t be afraid to do this. It will cement the ministry moment people have experienced. (You want a short prayer form a vocalist to create a new voice. This will help you with the next bit, a simple prayer 3-4 lines thanking God)
But you need to bring people out of the “river” now.
(Right off the back of the vocalist’s prayer)
I Exalt Thee
It has a good final lift. Its declaring something. Something has happened and everybody is going to make that statement!
Hand over to the preacher. He/She may already be getting ready. A quick “thank you Lord for the word” and then flow into asking people to “get their bibles out and take a seat”. Make this transition as clean as you can.
The last one. The connector to the Monday life. This is a big one to finish on. Lift people’s heads.
Counting On Your Name
Simple and use a bit of flair if we can.
Thanks for coming out today, its been great spending time together.(Well…it was!)
If God has been speaking to you today we have space to pray with you so before you get a coffee just come up here and our team is ready to pray with you. (Alter Call)
Lets share the grace together:
(Then play a repeat of a song as people start to move)
